Our Story

It all began while travelling through Spain and I needed a lift to another town, which was about 100km away. I was staying in a lovely coastal town and there was no train service, only a bus service that left at irregular times and a very expensive taxi service. The English friend that I was travelling with suggested we try a Blablacar, something I had never heard of before. Within minutes we had booked ourselves a ride with a driver for an amazing price, it was even cheaper than the bus! The driver picked us up the next morning at the place we had agreed upon and dropped us off an hour later at our destination. It was such a great experience that from then on I only used Blablacar for my travels throughout Europe.

On my return back to South Africa, I wondered how many people in our country had the same problem of not being able to travel to another town or city because there were no trains or buses that fitted in with their schedule. It didn’t take me long to realize it is a major problem in South Africa and that we have a poor public transport infrastructure. Very few trains or buses service the outlying areas and those that do are unreliable. I also discovered that there are almost 10 million cars and bakkies on our roads and 80% of South Africans drive alone to their intended destination. That means there are at least over 20 million empty vehicle seats available throughout the country on a regular basis. Imagine if we could connect some of those empty seats with people who need a lift in a cost effective and safe way. It was clear that a Blablacar type service was needed in South Africa and so began the journey to find a solution which ultimately led to the formation of CarTrip.

CarTrip – What is it?
CarTrip is a new way of carpooling – instantly – using a website or mobile app. Passengers pay a small fee and get point-to-point transportation in a comfortable car and drivers are able to get a cost reimbursement for their costs. A win-win situation for all parties, including the environment. At a flat fee of 80c per kilometre with no peak rates, CarTrip is several times cheaper than a taxi or similar services (E.g. Uber) and works out as a viable option for a commute so it could be used daily. It is estimated that each carpool with four riders can reduce greenhouse gases annually by over 5000 kgs, which is the equivalent to over 2200 litres of petrol.
Furthermore carpooling improves road safety, reduces congestion, reduces road maintenance costs and makes more parking available.

CarTrip – What it is not.
CarTrip is not a taxi service that picks up the rider at the riders location and drops off the rider at the rider’s destination. Taxi drivers (e.g. Uber drivers) make an income and profit from their service and use it as a primary or secondary job. In the case of CarTrip, when the driver is offering rides, the driver is travelling from one destination to another destination independent of any riders. The driver picks up and drops-off riders along the way with minor deviations for the convenience of the pickup and drop-off. The CarTrip Platform determines the price charged by the driver using the reimbursement rates defined by SARS so that drivers do not make a profit and instead partially recover some of their ordinary driving costs.

So if you're travelling alone to another town or city, whether it be for work or holiday, participating in an event, going to a concert or just visiting friends and family, then share your journey with a fellow traveller.
Lets make a difference to our environment, lets make new friends, lets make some money or save some money, lets do a CarTrip, together.
